How to Improve Your Physical Fitness in the New Year

By The Vault Team

The new year has arrived, and with it, a new slew of physical resolutions. If you’re like many of us, you may use the new year to look critically at your fitness. What actionable changes can you make to your workout routine that will yield long lasting and positive results?

Resolutions often get a bad rap—and that’s entirely on us. Our collective lack of follow-through means that most new year’s resolutions get abandoned by February. But not this year.

This year, we’re here to help you keep your commitment to your fitness and physical goals. Whether you’re starting from scratch or need to inject new life into a stale regimen, here are our top strategies and hacks for making fitness and physical health a priority in 2021.

Enter the Competition

One of the reasons resolutions fail so early on in the year is poor time management. After the excitement of the new year wears off, making fitness a priority gets tougher and tougher. As meetings get booked on your calendar and other commitments start to pile up, it’s easy to see how your plans for radical physical transformation can fall by the wayside.

A great solution to this problem is to create a personal goal, give it some time boundaries, and tell people about it. Want to run 10 miles but have yet to make it down the block? Mark a date on the calendar for when you will hit that milestone.

Once a plan is set in motion, start to set smaller goals leading up to the big one. If the goal is to run 10 miles by March 31st, you may set yourself a goal of running three miles by the end of January, five miles by the end of February, and eight miles by March 15th. Having an actionable plan with multiple checkpoints to work toward will help you commit to your progress and dedicate time to achieving it.

Find an Accountability Partner

Another obstacle when it comes to fulfilling resolutions is accountability—if no one knows about your goals, then no one will know when you decide to give up, right? Picking a close friend or partner to check-in with can seriously improve your chances of sticking to your physical commitment.

After all, it’s a lot easier to break a promise you made to yourself then to break one made to your friend or confidante.

Keep in mind—this partner does not have to keep tabs on your every move. They also don’t have to be a part of your physical journey (they may have their own resolutions to worry about).  Instead, make a plan with your accountability partner and ask them to check-in on specific days about your progress. Chances are, having these regularly scheduled check-ins will motivate you to keep moving.

Invest in the Right Wearable

Our Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Myles Spar, loves wearables, and for good reason: Modern wearables enable us to measure custom health data and collect personalized metrics that can help us achieve real progress with our physical fitness goals.

The right wearable won’t just optimize your training plan using customized sleep, stress, or activity metrics, it can also help you stay accountable to yourself.

But with so many wearables on the market, how do you know which wearable is right for you? Check out this post for insight on which wearable can help you with your specific goals.
